The particular type of wood is unknown. The outside has been polished to a velvety gloss. The carved lidded jewelry box concealed inside has a "handle" carved in one end and is lined inside with brown fabric. It measures 6" tall, 6-1/2" wide, 5-1/2" long (front to back). The heart shaped box is 4" tall, 3-3/4" wide, 4-3/4" long. The bottom side of the main box has been cut flat and it has four small pads to protect your furniture (last photo). The artist's name is engraved in the back side (photo #6). It's a little hard for me to read; looks like Don or Dan for first name, and last name is possibly Morris ??. It's in excellent condition. The outer box has no nicks, chips or other damage and shows no signs of wear. The jewelry box looks like new. If you're looking for a unique gift for your sweetheart, this is it!
